Basics of Flash Photography with Fuji EF-X500

by | Oct 31, 2016 | Blog, MAARTECH

I’m sometimes asked about a camera’s flash settings, and I have to admit that I know next to nothing about flash. I invited Billy Luong from the Fujiguys channel to Toronto’s YouTube Space to help me learn.

Behind the scenes
I’m lucky, that thanks to my subscribers, I’m eligible to use the Toronto Space, which has a studio with multiple sets. We debated getting a model – but thought it would work if I was the model, and we had a conversation through the camera.

The photos, should you wish to check their EXIF data, are available on flickr.

YouTube provides everything except a crew, so I enlisted Paul Marshman (The Travelling Boomer) to assist. Billy brought along his colleague and fellow Fujiguy Jerry Julien. I’m thankful to Benny at YouTube Space Toronto for his expert assistance and troubleshooting.

We set up the Fujifilm X-T2 with the XF 16-55 lens, and the VPB-XT2 grip. on a Manfrotto 546/504 tripod/head and connected it to an Atomos Shogun, which we then output to the studio’s big monitor. Billy used both the EF-X8 flash, which is included with the X-T2, and the optional EF-X500.

YouTube provided 2 Sony A7S II cameras with 18-105 lenses mounted on Manfrotto tripods. For audio Billy and are wearing the Sony URX B03 wireless mic system (they come two in a kit). Audio was recorded on a Tascam DR-70D and synced in post. We used Kino-Flo Tegra fixtures on c-stands.

I do read and respond to all comments, which are moderated. If you leave a relevant and civil comment without links it will be posted.

For your guidance –
The products reviewed are on loan, and returned after the review unless otherwise mentioned. I own the Manfrotto tripod, Atomos Shogun and the Tascam DR-70D.

My relationship with Fuji: Fuji asked for my assistance with video production, I am helping them shoot and edit videos for the Fujiguys Canada channel. In exchange, they have provided an extended loan of a Fuji X-T2 camera, grip and two XF lenses. No money has changed hands, they have no editorial influence on maartech videos for Fuji or other products.
