For my second flash lesson, I asked Sony’s Rob Skeoch to help me learn how to use a flash off-camera.

I’m lucky, that thanks to my subscribers, I’m eligible to use YouTube’s Toronto Space, which has a studio with multiple sets. As in the first flash video, Rob and I had a conversation through the camera.

YouTube provides everything except a crew, so I enlisted Thom Varey and Paul Marshman (The Travelling Boomer) to assist. I’m thankful to Benny at YouTube Space Toronto for his expert assistance and troubleshooting.
Rob set up the Sony A7R II with the Sony FE 85mm GM lens and the Sony HVL-F60 flash on a Manfrotto 546/504 tripod/head and connected it to an Atomos Shogun, which we then output to the studio’s big monitor. Rob also set up the smaller Sony HVL-F32 as a fill.
YouTube provided 2 Sony A7S II cameras with 18-105 lenses mounted on Manfrotto tripods. For audio Rob and I are wearing the Sony URX B03 wireless mic system (they come two in a kit). Audio was recorded on a Tascam DR-70D and synced in post. We used Kino-Flo Tegra fixtures on c-stands.
I edit on a 27″ iMac using Final Cut Pro X 10.3.
