Panasonic LX 100 comprehensive hands on review

by | Jan 27, 2015 | Blog, MAARTECH

I first saw the LX100 at a Panasonic media briefing, and wasn’t really impressed – but that was before I got my hands on it. This camera is so packed with useful functions that this video got out of hand. There’s the full version and a condensed (too long:didn’t watch) version.

I was really impressed by the range and complexity offered here. Prices are quoted in Canadian dollars.

The sixties getup was for a 1969-themed New Year’s Eve party – so much happened that year. We went with friends to Ottawa to see the Jack Bush exhibit at the National Gallery – a huge show, big paintings and a lot of them. Lots from private collections, arranged in chronological order with some biographical details as you proceeded. By the end, the experience was quite moving. Stayed at the Chateau Laurier, had afternoon tea, went to the Sunday evening mass at Notre Dame (a spectacular church with a huge organ) in French. Dinner at Social – all locations you’ll see in the video.

There’s a 4K sample reel, so you can see the video footage in 4K.

Shot video at the Illyin Pipes concert (they asked me to record the show – here’s a link to a whole song). They blew me away with great music and an amazing light show.

Also at the new Mattamy Velodrome in Milton, which has just opened in advance of the PanAm games. Nice track, but it was hard to find a good place to take photos or video – would be great to get a photo pass to get inside the ring. The venue isn’t particularly video friendly – the lighting creates an odd colour distortion in my recordings – maybe a different shutter speed would be better? I thought there would be a camera rail for a robot camera to follow the riders – didn’t see where that would be mounted.

And of course, skating at Nathan Philips square. Kim and Calla did the puzzle. The statues of Darryl Sittler, Ted Kennedy and Johnny Bower are outside the Air Canada Centre (west side).

New music, as recorded by Tom Hanley of Juice.

I do wish that manufacturers would provide live video out on the HDMI – that would increase the quality of these productions. And enable me to shoot better examples than I can arrange here in the studio Arrgghh – have to be more careful with my closeups to clean with a detail brush.

All photos (and their EXIF data) can be found at my flickr account. All photos have been processed in Lightroom – mostly minimal, the few images where I pushed the highlight down and shadow up should be obvious. If you are interested to have the original RAW file for any image, please ask.

On camera scenes shot using a Sony VG20 camera, with the SEL18200 lens. For the screens, I shoot with a Sony A6000 SEL1670Z with an ND. For the closeups, I used a Sony A6000 with the SEL30M35 macro lens.

Editing in Final Cut X 10.1.Rode NT USB for voice over.

As always, if there are any details I’ve overlooked, I welcome (and reply to) your comments and questions
